GRDSN 212
Design Technology V

Winter Quarter • 3 Credits

Students explore the production aspects of realistic graphic design projects and the technical issues that develop within their own designs. In conjunction with GRDSN 211 students develop production techniques and solutions to various media.

This is an intermediate level course that prepares students for work in the print and interactive media industries. Through projects assigned in GRDSN 211, students use Macintosh computers to refine and render visual images. This course focuses on solving technical problems and producing digital artwork to send to a service bureau or internet service provider. Students are evaluated on the completion of competencies for each project. The projects focus on the logic of page layout, image manipulation and vector drawing.

Course Description:

Teaching / Learning Strategies:
Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Projects
  • Demonstrations
  • Exercises & Lab Activities
  • Guest Speakers

Attendance Policy:
Attendance is equivalent to on the job training. Attendance is crucial to your progress and will be taken at the beginning of every class. The attendance policy is as follows:

3 Credit Course:  More than 6 absences = 0.0
(This equates to missing 3 weeks of class time)

Two late attendances = one absence

Make-up Policy:
For an absence to be excused a student will need to communicate to their instructor via email prior to an absence.

Students need to complete any work missed by the next class period, or by instructor arrangement.

If the above criteria are not met the absence will be applied to the attendance policy.

Grading / Evaluation Policy:

Depending on the course, the instructor will supply a point based grading system or a scoring rubric to set “a standard of performance” to communicate the expectations of quality around specific exercises or projects. In order to receive a grade for the course, all projects / exercises must be completed and received on the server by the end of the quarter.

Although exercises and labs are graded on a complete and incomplete basis; missing or incomplete exercises and labs not received or made complete by the end of the quarter will have .1 grade point deducted from your final grade.

Absences and Late Work: The Graphic Design program is designed to emulate the workflow found in most Graphic Design Studios and Businesses. Students are strongly encouraged to meet regular deadlines/due dates. The program faculty understand that life happens, so in these cases, students must communicate with their instructor(s) the need for additional time, either by email or in person, and discuss with the instructor the impact late work may have on other deadlines and assignments. If needed, deadlines may be extended a MAXIMUM of one week, without late penalty. At the instructor’s discretion, work submitted after the deadline extension may not be accepted.

Exceptional Circumstances: Exceptional circumstances are unexpected situations that will be considered on a case by case basis. Examples include the death of a close family member, serious illness or hospitalization. The faculty and student team, along with DSS staff where applicable, will work together to find solutions that may include additional extension time where possible, strategies to get back in sequence with the course, and specialized advising to adjust the education plan. In the most serious situations, where the best option is a full withdrawal from school, the college offers a medical withdrawal process through the Admissions/Registration Department.

In order to receive a passing grade, at least one project has to meet the final design due date. Some courses are in sequence. If you receive a failing grade in a course, you may have to come back the following year to complete the SFCC Graphic Design A.A.S. degree.

Online Sessions Policy:

Class activities and/or student presentations may be recorded. Recording any part of the online course without the permission of the faculty or students is a violation of the Standards of Conduct for Students, and those who do so are subject to the disciplinary process outlined in the conduct standards.
